Stefan Unterleithner, born in Vienna, studied first at the Conservatory of the Archdiocese of Vienna and at the Conservatory for Music and Dramatic Art solo singing, piano and organ until he became a student of the internationally renowned bassist Kammersänger Peter Wimberger (Vienna State Opera, Metropolitan Opera New York).
In addition to completing his law degree in Vienna, Stefan Unterleithner continued his training as a bass-baritone and was also a master student of the Spanish star soprano Montserrat Caballe in Zaragoza, Spain, who particularly valued the richness of color and the clear sound of his voice. Stefan Unterleithner completed other master classes with international singers such as Marcello Giordani (Sicily, MET New York), Giacomo Aragall and star bass Peter Rose.
Stefan Unterleithner himself also practiced teaching and had a position as professor for solo singing and voice training at Sunrise Studios Vienna (conservatory for acting, dance and singing) for 8 years. He was also head of the vocal department there, where he is still a member of the teaching staff, and was thus able to pass on his extensive knowledge of singing to young students, and trained well over 60 young singers in a wide variety of genres (classical, musical, world-music).pp
On his own opera-repertoire he worked with pianists and conductors such as Hans Fuchsberger (solo répétiteur of the Wiener Staatsoper), Klaus Busch (director of studies at the Wiener Volksoper) and Adrian Manz (first conductor of the United Bühnen Wien, Theater an der Wien).
In addition to roles such as Figaro and Graf in Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Minister and Pizarro in Fidelio, Escamillo in Carmen, it includes, among others, dramatic roles by Wagner and Strauss, such as Johanaan in Salome or Wotan in Rheingold and Walküre. In the Italian field, his repertoire includes roles as diverse as Attila, Silva and Banco by Verdi, as well as higher roles such as Renato in Maskenball or Scarpia in Tosca.
As a concert singer, his repertoire includes sacred music by Haydn, Rossini, Mozart and Schubert, and above all the song and ballad repertoire of Loewe.
Performances have taken him to England, Italy, Germany, Spain and Russia, for example to the Wagner Festival in Ravello / Naples, to Padua and Bologna, to the Auditorio Zaragoza, to Munich, to Rome to the Auditorio Cavour and to the Festival in St. Petersburg of the white nights with concerts in St. Stanislaus at the renowned International Music Festival and with appearances as Johanaan and Wotan also in St. Petersburg.
His debut was the role of Banco in Verdi's Macbeth in London with English Opera Singers in London.
His ensemble activity led Stefan Unterleithner to the Salzburg Festival in the productions of Gounods Faust (directed by Reinhard von der Tannen) with the Vienna Philharmonic under Alejo Perez, as well as to concert productions such as “Thais” by Massenet with Placido Domingo under Patrick Fournillier and “I due Foscari” by Verdi under Michele Mariotti.
In addition, Stefan Unterleithner was part of the ensemble of the Easter and Whitsun Festival in Baden-Baden (D) in recent years in the productions of “Mefistofele” with the Munich Philharmonic under Stefan Soltez with Erwin Schrott, as well as in “Rosenkavalier” (directed by Brigitte Fassbaender), “Tosca”
(directed by Philipp Himmelmann) and “Otello” (directed by Robert Wilson) with the Berlin Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle and Zubin Metha respectively.
